Global warming may present new opportunities for Ukrainian agriculture, including the potential for a third harvest of grains and the introduction of subtropical crops. According to Vera Balabukh, a candidate of geographical sciences and head of the Applied Meteorology and Climatology Department at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, winter crops have begun to mature more quickly, creating a window for planting additional harvests, such as buckwheat, after their harvest. The meteorologist shared this information in an interview with "Glavkom".
September, which has become similar in temperature conditions to a summer month, facilitates this process.
If the current climate changes continue, the temperature regime in certain regions, such as Kharkiv, may resemble that of Crimea.
According to the meteorologist, this will create opportunities for cultivating heat-loving plants, while breeders are already developing new varieties that can adapt to the changing conditions. However, rising temperatures may adversely affect crops that require cooler conditions.
For instance, potatoes, which are particularly sensitive to hot weather, may begin to rot at excessively high soil temperatures.
The southern regions of Ukraine are already facing unfavorable conditions for its cultivation. Cucumbers and cabbage, which require a significant amount of moisture for normal growth, are also at risk.
Recall that Russia attacked Ukraine with 81 drones: air defense forces shot down 37 UAVs, with hits and casualties reported. On the night of January 30, 2025, Russia launched a massive attack with 81 strike UAVs and imitation drones on various regions of Ukraine.
