Trump Becomes the New President of the USA
Donald Trump was inaugurated in Washington, D.C. He took the oath of office and officially became the 47th president of the United States of America. During his inaugural speech, Trump expressed his desire to leave a legacy as a "peacemaker" while building "the strongest military we have ever seen." He also declared a state of emergency at the southern border.
On the very first day of his second term, Trump signed a series of executive orders. In particular, he pardoned his supporters involved in the Capitol riot on January 6, reversed decisions made by the previous administration, ordered the withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement and the WHO. Additionally, he signed orders appointing dozens of government officials.
SBU Detains Generals and Colonels of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The SBU reported that they detained two generals and one colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who failed to provide adequate protection for the Kharkiv region during the Russian army's offensive in May 2024. According to the investigation, the officials initially did not prepare the defense of the border areas of Kharkiv and then lost control of the battle during the enemy's renewed offensive on Kharkiv. Media reports indicate that those detained include Brigadier General Yuri Halushkin, Lieutenant General Arthur Gorbenko, and Colonel Ilya Lapin. They are expected to be charged with negligence in military service and organizing unauthorized withdrawal from the battlefield.
Additionally, the former commander of the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine named after Anna of Kyiv has been detained. According to the investigation, while serving as commander, he failed to inform law enforcement about a significant number of instances of personnel abandoning their posts during the unit's preparation in the European Union and while carrying out combat missions on the eastern front. The SBU has not disclosed the name of the detainee, but it is known from open sources that Colonel Denis Ryumshin previously commanded the brigade.
Drones Attack Oil Depot and Aircraft Plant in Voronezh
Russian drones again attacked an oil depot in the village of Liski in the Voronezh region on Monday, igniting a new fire. At night, drones struck an aircraft plant in Voronezh itself, also resulting in a fire. Several other fires broke out in different parts of the city due to the debris from downed drones.
World Economic Forum Kicks Off in Davos
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has started in Davos, Switzerland, and will last until January 24. The theme of the forum is Cooperation for the Age of Intelligence. Global leaders will discuss issues such as geo-economic uncertainty, artificial intelligence, rethinking growth, and protecting the planet. Approximately 3,000 guests from over 130 countries are expected to attend the event. Among the prominent political leaders participating are Donald Trump (via video link), Ursula von der Leyen, leaders from Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also set to attend the forum.
Kyiv and Moscow Must Make Concessions – Rubio
The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State. Shortly after his confirmation, Rubio stated that resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine would require compromises from both sides. He emphasized that both Kyiv and Moscow need to make concessions. At the same time, he pointed out that Russia is the aggressor in this conflict. The newly appointed Secretary of State also added that he could not specify a timeline for the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
