Employees of the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) apprehended two individuals involved in a large-scale fraud attempt in the Lviv region. Specifically, a deputy of the Lviv regional council and the deputy mayor of one of the local communities were detained for trying to deceive a local private entrepreneur. This information was reported by SBI.
According to the investigation, the offenders promised the entrepreneur assistance in winning a tender for construction work in the region in exchange for a certain amount of money. However, when the entrepreneur independently won the tender, the fraudsters pretended that their influence was the reason for his success and began to aggressively demand a portion of the profits. The amount they sought to claim was 1 million 200 thousand hryvnias.
The SBI managed to apprehend the criminals at the moment they received 25 thousand US dollars and 190 thousand hryvnias. The accused have been formally charged with fraud committed by a preliminary group of individuals on a particularly large scale (part 5 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), which carries a severe penalty of up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
Currently, the issue of choosing a measure of restraint for the detainees is being resolved.
