After several warm days, winter is reminding us of its presence again.
Forecasters warn that Ukrainians can expect a drop in temperature, and at times even frost, in the near future.
What we know about the weather in the coming days
Starting from January 11, meteorologists predict a decrease in temperature. According to meteorologist Natalia Didenko, the cooling will be moderate: light frost is expected at night, with daytime temperatures ranging from -2 °C to +3 °C.
The average monthly temperature for January is forecasted to be between 0 and -3 °C, while in the southern regions and Transcarpathia, it will range from 0 to +2 °C. This January is likely to be 3–4 °C colder than December, which was generally close to the climatic norm.
Absolute temperature records
According to long-term observations, the lowest temperature recorded in Ukraine was -41.9 °C (noted in the Luhansk and Cherkasy regions), while the highest January maximum reached +18 °C, and even +21 °C in Crimea.
Record warm year 2024
Interestingly, 2024 has become the warmest year in the history of Kyiv since meteorological observations began. As reported by the Central Geophysical Observatory named after Boris Sreznevsky, the average annual temperature in the capital was +11.4 °C, which is 2.4 °C above the climatic norm.
In the past year, 52 temperature records were set, with the most occurring in April (13) and July (14). The coldest day was January 9 (-15.8 °C), while the hottest day was July 16 (+36.0 °C).
Total precipitation was 642 mm, corresponding to 104% of the climatic norm. The wettest months were April and June, while May and September saw significantly less rainfall than usual.
