Zelensky commented on Ukraine's NATO membership.

In the event of Ukraine being invited to join NATO, the Alliance's guarantees may temporarily apply only to the territories controlled by Ukraine.

Ukraine can only receive an invitation to NATO as a whole, within the borders of 1991. However, the provisions of the North Atlantic Alliance agreements can only apply to territories that are not occupied. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in a podcast with American researcher and blogger Lex Friedman. The video was published on the YouTube channel of the President's Office on the evening of January 5.   "Legally, an invitation to NATO is being extended to Ukraine," the head of state emphasized, referring to all our territories.   He stressed, however, that NATO can only operate in the parts of Ukraine under its control.   "This is something we can negotiate, I am confident. Yes, it’s a small victory for us, but if we see a diplomatic path to ending the war - that’s the first thing.
