Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the release of the first Israeli hostages who had been held by Hamas militants for over a year. The head of state emphasized that Ukrainians, amidst the ongoing war with Russia, understand the pain of separation and feel hope for the return of their loved ones. He expressed this in a post on his
X (Twitter) account on Sunday, January 19. Zelensky highlighted that this is a "deeply significant moment." "To see families reunited, knowing the tears of relief and joy this brings, is something we can all empathize with. As Ukrainians, we understand the pain of separation and the hope of bringing loved ones home," Zelensky stated in his publication. The head of state noted that the path to "lasting peace and dignity for all people" is long and challenging, yet Ukraine hopes for "further progress towards security, stability, and normal life throughout the Middle East." "Ukraine wishes for peace, justice, and reliable security guarantees for all nations, while continuing to fight for them," Zelensky emphasized. The release of three women is part of the first phase of an agreement, under which 33 of the remaining 98 hostages in Gaza will be freed over the next six weeks in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The return of the three Israeli women from Hamas captivity was described by the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an
incredibly touching event. Recall that
Israeli authorities announced a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
