The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, currently under occupation, has once again come close to a complete blackout due to another enemy shelling. This time, one of the two main power supply channels of the plant has been de-energized, significantly complicating its connection to the Ukrainian energy system. Currently, the Zaporizhzhia NPP operates on only one power line, which greatly increases safety risks. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
If the last power line fails, the plant will face another blackout, potentially leading to catastrophic consequences. Under such conditions, operating the plant becomes impossible without risking its stable operation and safety.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko noted that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is extremely dangerous: "For the second time this week, there is a real threat of blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP due to Russian shelling. Today, a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors will take place in Vienna, and we insist on the urgent and complete implementation of the resolution for returning the occupied plant under Ukraine's control. This is the only way to ensure the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP."
Energy specialists have already begun work to restore full power to the plant, but this can only be done if the security situation allows it. Should there be further attacks or power supply disruptions, the consequences could be unpredictable, confirming the need for immediate international response and the return of the plant under Ukraine's control.
Support from the international community, particularly through the IAEA, is critically important for ensuring stability and safety not only at the Zaporizhzhia NPP but for the energy situation in Ukraine as a whole.
