On the night of January 7, Russian forces attacked Ukraine using strike drones of the Shahed type and various types of imitation drones.

The air defense forces destroyed 28 out of 38 drones, with no hits recorded, and there is also no information about casualties, reports the Command of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The first drones entered the country's airspace on the evening of January 6, prompting alerts in several regions.

"As of 09:00, the destruction of 28 strike drones of the Shahed type and drones of other types in the Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Kirovohrad regions has been confirmed," the report states.

Ten Russian imitation drones were lost in terms of location, three of which flew towards the Russian Federation.

The Russians launched the drones from Millerovo, Kursk, and Primorsk-Akhtarsk.

Earlier, military expert Alexander Kovalenko assessed the potential for creating a layered air defense system in Ukraine that could protect against any missiles and drones.

The military expert explained that such a buffer zone is formed through air defense complexes of short, medium, and long-range, densely positioned considering all characteristics, capabilities, pros and cons, as well as auxiliary elements such as electronic warfare systems and even aviation.

"But we currently do not have the capacity to establish it.

More or less, a layered air defense system is only present in one region in Ukraine today – the Kyiv region, which is the capital, Kyiv; in others, it is not," Alexander Kovalenko added.
