A new dangerous trend is gaining popularity on social media, putting the health and lives of Ukrainian children at risk. This involves the creation of homemade explosives that teenagers are making by following step-by-step instructions from TikTok. Doctors in Lviv are already reporting serious cases of injuries where explosions of these "firecrackers" have resulted in severe facial burns. This is reported by the Lviv City Council.
In just the past week, three teenagers were hospitalized at St. Nicholas Hospital in Lviv with facial burns after homemade explosives detonated right in front of them. All these children, aged 10, 11, and 15, had crafted the explosives following online instructions. Their dangerous toy consisted of a plastic bottle, water, a foil ball, and a drain cleaner.
One of the patients, 11-year-old Vyacheslav from the Lviv region, recounted how he and a friend decided to replicate the experiment after seeing other teenagers create similar explosives. As a result, the bottle exploded, and its contents splashed onto his face, causing severe burns.
Doctors urge parents to closely monitor what their children are doing online and emphasize the importance of safety. Such "firecrackers" can not only harm the skin but also cause significant health damage, making it crucial to warn teenagers against dangerous experiments.
"These patients come to us with deep chemical burns on their faces. The drain cleaner present in these so-called 'firecrackers' literally eats away at the children's skin. The eyes are particularly affected, as the tissues there are the thinnest. We have treated three children in just one week. Unfortunately, all of them will have scars on their faces," said Galina Sayan, a burn and plastic surgeon, head of the City Center for Thermal Injury and Burn Surgery of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
