In the Odessa region, authorities uncovered a military unit commander who was soliciting bribes from his subordinates.
Odessa law enforcement and employees of the Security Service of Ukraine have exposed a 31-year-old commander of a military unit who organized illegal extortion of money from his subordinates. Investigators from the Odessa District Police Department No. 1, in collaboration with operatives from the 7th Department of the Military Counterintelligence of the SBU, under the procedural guidance of the Odessa Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Defense in the Southern Region, gathered sufficient evidence to detain the offender. This was reported by the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odessa region.
According to the information, the commander demanded 30% from his subordinates of the additional monetary payments provided to military personnel for performing combat tasks. He justified these demands by claiming they were necessary for the military unit, particularly for repairing equipment. Those who refused to pay became victims of threats: the official promised to create artificial obstacles in their service, such as inventing shortcomings in their work or transferring them to other units or combat zones.
From June to December last year, the commander managed to collect over 400,000 hryvnias from his subordinates. The operation to detain him occurred while he was receiving another bribe for December amounting to 41,000 hryvnias. Law enforcement conducted authorized searches in the suspect's vehicle and at his residence, where the latest bribe, mobile phones, and the offender's bank cards were seized.
Law enforcement officials informed the commander of the suspicion under part 3 of article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - extortion and receiving illegal benefits by an official. The law provides for a penalty of up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property for these actions.
Currently, the court has chosen a preventive measure for the suspect in the form of detention with the possibility of bail.
