U.S. authorities are leaning towards supplying Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles JASSM. However, these deliveries will not take place for several months, as technical issues need to be resolved. This was reported on Saturday, November 23, by
Reuters. According to three sources from the agency, an announcement regarding the inclusion of JASSM missiles in the arms package for Ukraine is expected within a week. However, a final decision has not yet been made. Officials stated that the delivery of JASSM missiles to Ukraine could significantly alter the strategic landscape of the conflict, as much of Russian territory would fall within the range of powerful precision munitions. Military analysts suggest that the use of stealthy JASSM missiles, which can strike farther than most of the missiles currently possessed by Ukraine, could push Russian concentrations and supply depots back hundreds of miles. This, in turn, would complicate Russia's ability to conduct offensive operations and potentially provide Ukraine with a strategic advantage. Specifically, launching these missiles from points along Ukraine's northern border with Russia could enable the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to target locations as far as the Russian cities of Voronezh and Bryansk. Meanwhile, in the southern direction, launching missiles near the front line could allow Ukraine to strike airfields or naval facilities in Crimea. "The JASSM missile could enable Ukraine to hit targets approximately 300 km deep into Russian territory, including at least 30 air bases, some of which Russia has used to launch strikes," Reuters clarifies.
The agency also notes that JASSM is currently integrated only for aircraft developed in the U.S. Ukraine, on the other hand, will utilize several dozen F-16s, each capable of carrying two cruise missiles. One U.S. official mentioned that attempts have been made to make the missile operational with non-Western fighter jets that Ukraine possesses. However, they did not specify which aircraft were being referred to. It is known that Ukraine uses MiG-29, Su-24, and Su-27 aircraft. Earlier, it was reported that U.S. President Joe Biden, two months before the end of his presidential term, for the first time
permitted Ukraine to use ATACMS to protect AFU in Russia's Kursk region. Following this,
France and the United Kingdom allowed Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory using their SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles, following the U.S. agreement on long-range strikes by the AFU with ATACMS missiles.
