Through the collaborative efforts of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police, a nefarious terrorist act aimed at eliminating a police unit responding to a fake emergency call to "102" was successfully thwarted. Operatives apprehended two Russian agents during the preparation of the attack while they were at a hotel after completing the primary phase of the operation. This information was reported by SBU.
It has come to light that the perpetrators had previously rented an apartment in Zhytomyr, where they set up two improvised explosive devices (IEDs). One of the explosives was concealed within a soft toy, while the other was connected to a mobile phone, enabling the enemy to activate the explosives remotely.
The plan involved the explosions being triggered at the moment the police entered the premises in response to the false call. Meanwhile, the agents were supposed to leave the apartment and hide in the hotel to receive further instructions from their Russian handler.
Thanks to the timely response of the SBU and the coordinated actions of law enforcement, the terrorist attempt was successfully disrupted. All stages of preparation were documented, and the two detainees—residents of Dnipropetrovsk—were arrested in the hotel they had arrived at after obtaining the explosives.
Forensic examination of the explosive devices revealed that they were equipped with shrapnel, significantly enhancing their destructive capability in the event of detonation.
The detainees have been informed of their suspicion for attempting to commit a terrorist act in conspiracy. They are currently in custody, facing a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison with asset confiscation.
