Finnish President Alexander Stubb believes that a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia could occur in the coming months. He expressed this opinion on Thursday, January 30, during a meeting with journalists, according to the Finnish publication
Yle. Stubb stated that he views with cautious optimism the efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump to achieve peace in Ukraine. "First, there will be an attempt to reach a ceasefire, which will take from 3 to 6 months, followed by peace negotiations," Stubb said. According to him, Finland's policy is to adhere to the principles of independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Stubb noted that in the coming days, weeks, and months, Ukraine should be supported in a way that ensures it has a strong position to initiate potential negotiations for a ceasefire and peace. Stubb added that his optimism increased after speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. As the publication reports, when Stubb was asked about Trump's chances of bringing Putin to the negotiating table and ultimately achieving peace in Ukraine, the Finnish president highlighted Trump's method of issuing ultimatums to compel Putin to engage in peace talks. According to Stubb, Putin needs to be forced into negotiations rather than persuaded. "Personally, I believe that Putin only understands tough rhetoric. And this is precisely the language that Donald Trump is currently using with him," Stubb said, adding that this is a positive development. In his view, there is no risk that peace in Ukraine will be discussed without Ukraine's involvement. He also stated that he is confident that Europe should participate in the negotiations in one form or another, as the future of European security structures is at stake. It is worth noting that the day before,
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a "lot of hard work" is needed to end the war, and this will take some time.
