If you ever thought that grabbing a kebab is always a safe choice, it might be time to take a closer look at what is being offered to you.

A study from Wrocław University showed that the reality is not as straightforward. Researchers analyzed the ingredients of kebabs from 31 establishments in Poland and four in Germany using genetic testing. The goal was simple: to determine whether the meat matched what was stated on the label.

The results were extremely alarming. Only 28% of the samples were authentic! The remaining 60% contained either undeclared types of meat or substitutes for cheaper alternatives, such as chicken instead of lamb. Generally, chicken and beef were mixed in instead of the expensive lamb.

But that’s not all! In three samples that were supposed to contain lamb, there was actually pork – this could certainly raise many questions for those who do not consume pork for religious or cultural reasons. Interestingly, chicken kebabs turned out to be honest in most cases, although one sample also "stole" beef.

It’s important to remember that this study only covered a small sample from Poland and Germany, and one should not judge all establishments based on it. However, similar issues have been found in other countries. For instance, in the UK in 2009, 40% of kebabs could not accurately specify what meat they contained.

So, while these results may raise concerns, it’s essential not to generalize and assume that all places are the same. The quality of meat can vary, and in most well-known restaurants, you will be offered high-quality options.

As always, transparency in labeling remains a key factor for consumer trust. So before enjoying your kebab, it’s best to clarify what exactly you are eating!
