Three passenger planes were spotted in the sky over Ukraine. The incident occurred on January 6, but the information has only just come to light. The aircraft flew over the Zakarpattia region, near the city of Uzhhorod, according to TSN, citing data from the Flightradar24 service.

Radar information indicates that the planes spent some time in the restricted airspace of Ukraine over the Zakarpattia region before abruptly changing course and continuing their flight over Romanian territory.

The following flights entered Ukrainian airspace:

  • Finnair's Airbus A330, operating flight FIN121 from Helsinki to Delhi.
  • Wizz Air's Airbus A321, on flight W67950 from Riga to Kutaisi.
  • Finnair's Airbus A350, flying flight FIN41 from Helsinki to Seoul.

Aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko, in a comment to TSN, suggested that the incursion of the planes into Ukrainian airspace could be linked to the active operation of electronic warfare (EW) systems used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to counter enemy attacks. These systems may have interfered with navigation instruments, leading to a route error.

"Flightradar very rarely makes mistakes. It receives information not only from transponders on planes, which constantly transmit signals about their location in the airspace, but also from the American air traffic monitoring system. Therefore, passenger planes could have entered Ukrainian airspace likely due to the active use of EW measures. The aircraft might have entered their operational zone and deviated from their route for a certain period," the expert explained.

Additionally, theoretically, the route could have changed due to adverse weather conditions. If there was bad weather in the region, pilots might have requested permission for a brief flight over Ukrainian territory. However, the expert believes that the most probable reason remains the influence of EW systems.

"The entry of planes into the airspace of another state is a very concerning situation for the crews, as they could be shot down. Especially over Ukraine during enemy raids. There won't be time to determine what exactly is flying towards the air defense, as enemy drones and cruise missiles attack our cities from the east, north, west, and south. They can approach from any direction, turn around, and strike a chosen target. There have already been cases when enemy cruise missiles and Shahed drones entered this region through Romania and Moldova. Therefore, the situation for these planes was quite dangerous," Romanenko added.

It is worth noting that North Korea receives Russian technology and combat experience due to the war in Ukraine. The involvement of over 12,000 North Korean troops in combat operations on Russian territory indicates close cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, noted Dorothy Camilla Shi.
