The first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak has been registered in Ukraine, which causes respiratory illnesses in people of all ages, including children and the elderly. Information about the virus began to be actively discussed following its spread in China and Kazakhstan, drawing the attention of specialists. This was reported by TSN.

Since the beginning of the epidemic season, 14 confirmed cases of HMPV have been recorded in Ukraine. Infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

Virus Characteristics

According to epidemiologist Olga Golubovska, the incubation period for metapneumovirus ranges from 3 to 6 days, and the duration of the illness can vary from 7 to 10 days depending on the severity of the case. The virus is active in temperate climates late in winter and during spring. Infection occurs via respiratory droplets, and reinfections are possible.

Although the illness usually manifests in a mild form (runny nose, cough), it can lead to serious complications such as respiratory failure. The topic of the virus has garnered attention, and medical professionals are monitoring the situation to determine if any of the infected are residents of Kyiv.

How to Identify HMPV

Metapneumovirus is classified as a respiratory virus that is always present in the environment. These viruses are periodically detected in Kyiv, especially during the epidemiological season. Last year, only one case of metapneumovirus was recorded in the capital. According to Serhiy Chumak, the chief state sanitary doctor of Kyiv and the general director of Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this is due to selective laboratory testing. Samples are analyzed as part of monitoring the spread of viruses such as influenza and metapneumovirus, provided by medical facilities for further study.

A Case of Metapneumovirus Has Been Recorded in Kyiv

Specialists discovered the virus in samples taken from a resident of Kyiv, who became the first registered patient with HMPV in the capital. Currently, this is the only confirmed case, but there may be more instances as many patients might not seek medical help or get tested for the virus.

"The man is a resident of Kyiv. He has not traveled abroad and has remained in Kyiv. Currently, he feels more or less fine. There are no severe symptoms. The man sought medical assistance. The medical facility is under surveillance, and his samples were sent to us for research. Over the past week, this is the first case of HMPV detected in Kyiv, one of 14 laboratory-confirmed cases in Ukraine," said Serhiy Chumak.

When Can Complications Occur

Metapneumovirus usually presents in a mild form, resembling a common cold or ARVI, but it can cause serious complications in vulnerable populations. According to specialists, vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure, reducing the risk of severe illness. So far, no cases of severe forms of the disease caused by this virus have been registered in Kyiv.

What to Do to Avoid Getting Sick

Regarding the prevention of metapneumovirus, the main measures are similar to those applied during outbreaks of coronavirus and ARVI. Serhiy Chumak emphasizes the importance of avoiding crowded places, not coming into contact with sick individuals, and staying home while seeking medical help if ill.

If a visit to a hospital or other errands is necessary, wearing a protective mask is recommended. When sick at home, it is important to regularly ventilate the space, conduct wet cleaning, and thoroughly wash hands after going outside or using public transport.
