During the recent drone attacks on Kyiv, observers noted that the enemy drones were flying at extremely low altitudes. The "Shaheds" were operating at just 100 meters above the ground. Aviation expert Valery Romanenko pointed out that this cannot be classified as a new tactic from the enemy, but he acknowledged that deploying drones at such heights indeed heightens the threat to high-rise buildings in the capital. This was reported by TSN.
"The flight of drones at ultra-low altitudes is quite possible. I believe that the Russians do not equip their drones with radio altimeters, but they likely use something similar to altimeters or laser altimeters. Radio altimeters are mainly installed on cruise missiles, as they are more accurate than altimeters that determine air pressure differences at various heights. The enemy configures their UAVs for ultra-low flight to make them harder to detect by radar. However, their detection through acoustic and optical systems becomes significantly easier," the aviation expert stated.
According to Romanenko, the likelihood of a "Shahed" hitting a high-rise building in Kyiv remains extremely high.
"We have built so many 'candles' in Kyiv that the probability of a hit is quite significant. Moreover, these buildings are not included in the old Soviet digital maps that are used to plot the routes for cruise missiles and drones. There is a substantial amount of high-rise construction. Often, the flight altitude of drones is around 50 meters (give or take 10 m). This means that the greatest threat is to apartments between the 14th and 18th floors. Most 'Shaheds' tend to hit those areas. At least, a drone hit a high-rise building within a kilometer of my home, with the impact zone being the 15th to 16th floors," Romanenko explained.
The expert emphasized that the most effective defense option is to destroy enemy drones before they reach the city. If the UAVs are already over the capital, it is crucial not to neglect safety and to promptly seek shelter.
"If air combat is taking place over the city, the State Emergency Service advises staying away from windows. If the attack occurs at night, it is best to wait out the alarm in the area near the elevator, so that you are protected by several walls on all sides. This is the only advice I can give to people. Indeed, if the attack is at night and happens 3-4 times with breaks, you won't be able to run to a shelter in time," the expert noted.
Recall that Russia launched a nighttime attack on Ukraine using drones and missiles: air defense forces destroyed 57 UAVs. On the night of January 23, 2025, Ukraine repelled a large-scale aerial assault. The enemy fired 92 strike drones and 4 ballistic missiles, resulting in destruction and casualties among the population.
