Three Ukrainian nuclear power plants have reduced their power levels following a series of new attacks by Russia on energy infrastructure, further jeopardizing nuclear safety amid the ongoing war. This was reported by Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)....
The power reduction at the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine NPPs has occurred for the second time in less than two weeks. At these plants, which operate nine reactors, a decision was made to decrease electricity production as a precautionary measure in response to active military operations. One of the steps taken included the shutdown of one reactor at the Rivne NPP.
Despite the challenges, the plants continued to receive electricity from external sources, even though the Khmelnytskyi NPP lost connection with two power transmission lines.
The energy system of Ukraine remains vulnerable, posing a serious threat to nuclear safety. The IAEA emphasizes the need for military restraint in areas where key nuclear energy facilities and the infrastructure they depend on are located. The agency will continue to monitor damage to facilities and power lines that are critical for ensuring the safety of nuclear plants.
As a reminder, the General Staff reported: Russians attempted to break through the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Defense forces continue operations in the Kursk region; the enemy carried out 19 airstrikes on its own territory over the past day.
