"Dot" and "krapka": Discover the secrets of using these terms correctly in the Ukrainian language.

The modern Ukrainian language is beautiful and melodic, as it absorbs all the nuances of our ancestors' voices, literary masterpieces, and heartfelt conversations. However, despite this, people still make annoying mistakes, particularly confusing the use of the words "точка" and "крапка".

It is essential to understand the true meaning of each, and you will no longer repeat inaccuracies in your speech. Philologist Marina Gerasimenko shared simple rules in the Telegram channel "Ukrainian with Marusya".

First, let's clarify the word "крапка". This is a punctuation mark. It can be one dot, three dots, a colon, or a semicolon. There are no "точки" in punctuation marks! By the way, in the well-known saying "розставляємо крапки над і".

In the Ukrainian language, the word "точка" is used more broadly. It has multiple meanings:

• a point on a geographical map;
• a firing point;
• a point as a destination (from point A to B);
• physical quantities — dew point, boiling point, melting point, etc.;
• a trading point.

In particular, this word is also frequently used in expressions like "бить в одну точку ", "иметь точку опоры" and "сдвинуться с мертвой точки ".

It is believed that the phrase "точка зрения" is a calque from Russian. However, the linguist assures that this is not the case. In fact, it is a perfectly normalized phrase. Nevertheless, you can always replace it by saying "з мого погляду", "поділяємо погляди" or "суперечливі погляди". The latter is appropriate to use if people have different perspectives on the same issue.
