This ancient tradition is linked to the desire to use daylight more efficiently, particularly for energy savings. However, not everyone is aware of when and how this transition takes place.

In 2024, the clock will be set back for winter time this week, during the night from Saturday to Sunday, October 27. Overall, this should be the last time change in Ukraine, but it’s not guaranteed yet, as Volodymyr Zelensky has not signed the law.

What is winter time?

Winter time is the transition to standard "astronomical" time, when clocks are set back one hour. This means that morning hours will be brighter, but evenings will become darker earlier. Winter time is observed in Ukraine from the end of October to the end of March.

Why do we change the clocks?

Historically, the time change was implemented to save electricity. Transitioning to winter time allows for better use of daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting. However, in the modern world, where energy consumption depends on many other factors, the effectiveness of this practice is increasingly questioned. Despite this, Ukraine continues to adhere to the practice of seasonal time changes.

When to change the clocks in 2024?

This year, the transition to winter time in Ukraine will take place on the night of October 26-27. At 4:00 AM, clocks should be set back one hour, meaning it will become 3:00 AM. As a result, all Ukrainians will enjoy an extra hour of sleep that night.

How to adapt more easily to the time change?

The clock change can affect daily routines and biorhythms. Here are some tips to help ease the transition to the new time:

  1. Prepare in advance. A few days before the time change, start going to bed 15-30 minutes earlier. This will help your body adjust to the new schedule.

  2. Ensure quality sleep. Try to create a comfortable sleeping environment: ventilate the room, turn off bright screens, and take an evening walk.

  3. Balanced nutrition. A light dinner and avoiding caffeine or heavy foods before bedtime can help you fall asleep faster and achieve quality rest.

  4. More natural light. After the time change, try to spend more time outdoors, especially in the morning. Daylight helps biorhythms adapt better to the new conditions.

  5. Physical activity. Morning exercises or workouts can boost your energy and help your body adjust more quickly to the time change.
