2025 became a turning point for Europe, as Trump indicated that he no longer wishes to be the primary guarantor of security for either the continent or Ukraine, reports Politeka.net.
According to the Financial Times, this signal could prompt Europeans to expedite the resolution of their military rearmament issues.
"What Hegset said is deeply unpleasant. But if it encourages Europe to get its act together - then it could be the jolt we need," emphasized Jack Watling, a senior researcher at a London analytical center.
Currently, the main defense systems in Europe, including F-35 fighters and missile systems, originate from the USA. Moreover, American assistance remains critically important for conducting complex military operations, reports Politeka.
Europe is now actively discussing options to enhance its military capabilities. Key initiatives include the establishment of a pan-European air defense shield, the development of transportation systems for rapid mobility and aerial refueling, as well as the procurement of long-range munitions. However, the biggest issue is that Europe lacks sufficient resources to ensure nuclear security, particularly concerning tactical nuclear weapons that are available in the USA.
"The problem is that for 80 years, European armies have been assembled and trained to rely on support from the USA, and replacing this reliance will require time and billions of euros. A more pressing question is what to do if the USA suddenly withdraws some or all of its approximately 90,000 troops stationed in Europe," the press service stated.
