Trump does not care much about the fate of the EU, which means Europe will have to quickly develop its independent defense capabilities, reports Politeka.net.
According to Reuters, this statement was made by Friedrich Merz, the newly elected Chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union. He believes that Trump's recent remarks suggesting Europe should take care of its own security pose a serious threat to the current architecture of international security.
Merz emphasized that following the sharp statements from the Trump administration, which even initiated negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine without European involvement, US allies in Europe must realize that they can no longer rely on Washington, as reported by Politeka.
"It is becoming clear that this government does not care much about the fate of Europe," he stated.
Friedrich Merz also pointed out that the upcoming NATO summit in June could be a critical moment for the future of the Alliance. According to him, the possibility that Trump might not uphold NATO commitments will force Europe to rethink its defense policy and reduce its dependence on the US.
The Dutch Foreign Minister, Kaspar Veldkamp, also reacted to Merz's statements, noting that this signifies the beginning of a new era for Europe.
